Introduction
This document is made specifically for growth on Twitter (I’ll always call it “Twitter”) but many of the strategies can be used on other platforms (notably the “reply-guy” strategy).
If you’re not sold on why you should build your online brand, here are real-life examples:
- Drive leads to your business
- Network with like-minded individuals online and in real life
- Receive free high-authority marketing / PR opportunities
- Easily recruit top talent
- Get meetings with whoever you want
- Scale your business
- Find business partners
- Raise money from investors
- Earn money from social media platforms

Publishing Content
Posting
If you have under 1k followers, tweet from your own account MAX twice per day. Under 1k, you get very little visibility and are essentially “posting into the abyss”. Once you reach 1k followers, post 3x per day every single day.

Engaging
Commenting (reply-guy strategy)
- Find, follow, and
INTERACT
with accounts in the niche you want to target
- 30 comments a day
(at least) on other accounts
- Block out 30 minutes each day and get into "engagement mode"
Here’s what happens when you engage:
- People see your content → people visit your profile → people follow your account
- The Law of Reciprocity kicks in
- When you engage with others, they’re more likely to engage with you
- More engagements on your posts leads to the algorithm boosting your content
It’s crucial to
add value
in every comment. If you are commenting one word, no one is going to follow you.
What To Reply / Comment
(credit
Hypefury):
- What unexpected connection can you make between content and an unrelated field or concept?
- Can you challenge or expand in a respectful, thought-provoking way?
- Can you share a personal anecdote that offers a unique perspective on the topic?
- Can you apply the creator's ideas in a completely different context or industry?
- What question delves deeper into an aspect the creator might not have considered?
- Can you reframe the topic to appeal to a different audience or demographic?
- What metaphor or analogy could you use to illustrate the creator's point in a novel way?
- How might this idea evolve or be relevant 5 or 10 years from now?
- What contrarian yet well-reasoned viewpoint could you present on the topic?
- How could you synthesize this creator's ideas with those of another influencer in the same field?
What Accounts to Reply To
- Bigger than you: Helps you get more eyeballs/impressions
- Same size as you: They engage back with you helping build credibility
- Smaller than you: They become your fans (loyalty)
Lists
Utilizing lists is a great way to keep track of all the accounts you want to engage with.
Create three lists:
- Networking List: Accounts
you want to create relationships with.
- Be specific about who you target. They should be:
- In your niche or industry
- A few steps ahead of you (follower-count wise)
- Someone you actually like
- Maintaining Relationships: Accounts that you want to maintain relationships with.
- Inspiration: Accounts you want to post like and get inspiration from. Find the category leaders in your niche.
Bookmarks
Create bookmark categories to keep them organized. Here are four categories I recommend:
Later
As in, “I don't have time right now but really want to deep dive into this.”
Content
Bookmark these posts to review later if it gave you an idea for your own content.
Viral
Bookmark viral tweets to look at later. Breakdown any similarities and try to emulate why they went viral.
Friends
Did your friend post something cool and you want to give them a boost? Put all of those here so you don't clutter up your bookmarks.
The Golden Rule of Engagement
Be thoughtful and add value.
Profile
It’s crucial to optimize your profile. You will not grow with a poor profile.
Profile Picture
No selfies. No shadows. Nothing old. Unless you are anonymous, the picture should be you. Don’t underestimate the power of a good picture.
Cover Photo
This is valuable real estate. Make it clean, clear and relevant. Should look professionally designed. Should share some information about you / your business.
Bio
Use this formula:
- Who you are
- What you do
- Who you do it for
Hyperlink
Drive people from your profile to your website / other resources.
Pinned Tweet
Post either your best performing tweet or a tweet telling people about you. You want your best stuff to be found right away. Check out mine
here.
Highlights
Add your best posts here. “Best” doesn't mean most impressions. It means the posts that best help people get to know who you are.
Direct Messages (DMs)
This is where the magic happens. Pick five people per day and send them a message. Don't ask for anything, just compliment them or be useful. The conversations will naturally flow from there.
Here’s my 3-step DM strategy:
- Identify the people you want to connect with.
- Find people in your feed. Visit their profile, learn about them, and follow them.
- Engage with their posts.
- It’s not enough to reply “great post” a million times. Add value, ask questions, and spark conversation.
- Leverage DMs.
- After a while, slide into their DMs complimenting their content. THEN ask to hop on a call to chat and connect.
(Please do not copy and paste the same cold DM a million times)
Example 1:
Hey man! I love your content. Feel like there isn't a ton of 100% transparent / authentic people on here. I respect it.
Example 2:
Hey! I really appreciate you coming around and supporting my content each day. Thank you for that. Looks like you're getting some traction too. Do you want to hop on a Zoom call next week to figure out how we can support each other more?
Final Thoughts
Growing on social media is
time consuming work. Most people quit after a few months, but if you stay consistent every single day, you will be rewarded.
I've been posting since June 2023 and it has changed my life. I even started a business and drive 10s of thousands of dollars from X
every month.
The system I built for myself, I now offer to others through FounderBrands.
